So I take it you voted "no" on 400 and 200? ;-)

I was for the immigration issue, mainly because I see the patience and dedication legal immigrants to this country (my mother for one) go through and have watched as scofflaws are rewarded at every level. This got out of control in San Diego, California and eventually several hospitals shut down because they were forced by law to provide service to illegal aliens. This bankrupted them. For all those who have obeyed the laws, crossed their t's, there are others who are being rewarded by our guilt-ridden society that believes false charity is the answer.

If you have food for a dozen and then feed thirty with it they all barely survive and live miserably. Feed a hundred and they all starve to death. That's what is happening to the Southwest. We simply can't support the entire Mexican population. They need to learn to reform their own government and create their own economic infrastructure capable of bringing a higher quality of life to their citizens. They have awesome beach front property, could create lucrative ports of entry that would rival San Diego or Long Beach and could become world class vacation destinations with their climate if they would clean up the crime and corruption. Instead, the nation is filthy with substandard housing and ghettos which subsist on crime, kidnapping and prostitution, and are saddled with a government corrupt to the core with no vision other than getting America to accept their residents and work in America.

That's the problem. Already I fear activist judges will try to overturn the legislation. Folks just don't understand that a bleeding heart often leads to more suffering for everyone involved and is not the best way to bring about change.

The Southwest needs to address this or all these states will eventually become universally poor, crime-ridden and areas that the wealth-producers (malls, corporations) flee from. We already see the big companies setting up shop in Mexican land so that they can pay low wages and compete with firms that manufacture in China or India.

Change needs to happen in Mexico. If they all are really desirous of living like Americans Mexico should apply for statehood. If their application were accepted, then our laws would protect them the corruption would be weeded out and they would not be paid sub-standard wages for the same work.

Did you ever think about that?

I always thought if enough Mexicans could see the value in eliminating the low wages, there would be more prosperity for all on both sides of the border. Their exploitation would cease almost overnight. Statehood is really their best destiny. Hawaii went from an island in the middle of nowhere to the land of shiny hotels, prosperity and humidity. Pride stands in the way though. So why not simply duplicate the US Constitution and legal system down to the letter? At least that would give them a more balanced framework to establish a more prosperous and safe nation.

If they do not--their destiny is to become the slaves of the 21st century. Exploited by large and small concerns. If they get citizenship here or a equivalent there will be hordes (even more hordes let's say) fleeing to America. The ones left behind will then be exploited and more factories and sweatshops will be set up down there. Over here the jobs will be few and low paying and unemployment will just massively rise.

How I wish there were a few visionaries within Mexico who would crusade for their own destiny apart from fleeing to America for work and sending money back home! The destiny of millions, MILLIONS would be entirely different with the application of a little humility and intellect.

Most conservatives wont take the time to explain the issue if they've taken the time to really think it out. Many conservatives from outside the region don't have firsthand experience in the issue either and so don't see the human tragedy unfold daily for millions. As a result they get labeled as racist, insensitive or what-have-you. That's preposterous of course but keeps the divide going and keeps real solutions and real change from occuring--and so the suffering, exploitation and poverty continue unabated.
