It's a legitmate question as to prehistory, but I don't think it affects the present debate

From a
NASA source:

"Vostok data show how CO2 abundance and temperature have fluctuated over 160,000 years, and there is a positive correlation. That is, when temperature goes up, so does the amount of CO2. This does not show whether the increase in CO2 caused the increase in temperature, just that they changed together. Although the CO2 content follows temperature during periods of glaciation, it lags behind temperature during periods of cooling.

Also, the temperature changes are 5-14 times larger than would be expected on the basis of CO2 change alone. This implies that other effects are amplifying the response. Vostok data also show that methane closely follows temperature and CO2 variations. History of Climate Change shows temperatures since about 900,000 years ago. These changes were certainly not caused by humans. "

Enviro-whackos like me aren't arguing that all climate changes were caused by CO2, but that this one is being caused by human-produced CO2.
