The onset of middle age often has results like this.

The shine of youth no longer clings to an idea or suite of ideas we embraced when we were 10, and so we reinvent ourselves in order not to face the ways in which we have failed to make those ideas into reality.

A lot of people divorce in middle age.

This is true of the loud far-left, who have had to become more extreme in their approach to the philosophy behind liberal thinking and action in order to distance themselves from their own loss of innocence, which we all endure as we age.

It's also true of people who leave their ideas behind because they don't like the people who claim to speak for them. There was a reason he became a liberal. Instead of ceding his early life and disavowing his earlier principles as outdated, and joining the people who are now in fashion, he could attempt to rediscover what made them important to him in the first place.

But no. Let's all accept the merchandized, prepackaged version of political thought, philosophy and morality. Mass-marketted concepts are more shallow, but they're easier. Heaven knows we wouldn't want to have to work for our thoughts, let alone work hard. Individuality really doesn't count for much anymore.

This is how we become polarized.
