Know any that are run by conservatives? Maybe they can get me to see the Truth. I would like to find out if there are any conservatives left, really. Conservatives conserve things. From what I can see, the current crop of conservatives is much more interested in tearing things down than in conserving anything. Very unlike the guardians of tradition and disciples of caution that I remember from my childhood.

The plain fact is, conservatives have been calling liberals all kinds of vile names for a very long time. I'm not surprised that you think I think like that. It has been stock in trade on your side of the aisle for a long time now, so naturally that is The Way Things Are.

As for my shallow approach to your position, I would point out that many people discover that something they thought was right or wrong when they were young is up for re-evaluation in middle age. In my case, I have discovered, as much to my delight as to my embarrassment, that I have recovered a belief in Jesus. I can follow the Teacher without worshipping the Christ, which is the delight. It took me 20 years to figure this out, which is the embarrassment. Yet this is something rediscovered about myself; it isn't really new.

Mr. Thompson, in his umbrage, has decided that he is going to leave a way of thought because he doesn't like the company. If it's truly part of his makeup, he won't really leave his way of thought, and his move to "conservatism" will be a bad fit. He can compensate for this by becoming either a marginal conservative or a zealous, and possibly vituperative, convert. Instead of leaving his way of thought, he could simply leave the company and reclaim his way of thought cast in a more independent, less group-directed context. But he has decided not to do this. Maybe because it feels more comfortable to be a member of a tribe, I don't know.

But now, black is white and white is black, and the areas of hue and shade are a little smaller, because someone else has decided it's all one way or all the other.

I'm sorry you think I'm in the shallow end just because I eschew the diving well.
