re: "Why I'm leaving the Left"

When Keith is leaving, the assumption is made that he is in motion and going somewhere. You gratuitously assume this means he is going from the "left" to the "right" and is taking out immediate conversion papers to the Republican party.

As with many of your assumptions, this is not reflective of any trend within the Democratic party. I do like the quote in the article that says, (John Gardner), "that the ever renewing society will be a free society (whose] capacity for renewal depends on the individuals who make it up." A continuously renewing society, Gardner believed, is one that seeks to "foster innovative, versatile, and self-renewing men and women and give them room to breathe."

Wow, what a marvelous description of what you call the "left" and is exemplified by the dynamic that has been the Democratic party since FDR.

The only relevant part of the post is the question, "does the Democratic party need to continually re-invent itself?" And the answer is a resounding "yes."

The other question is, "does our democracy need to continually re-invent itself?" And the answer is again, "yes!"

As the Republican party is based on maintaining ascribed status, religious conformity, and other conservative virtues/constrictions, that party is by definition desconstructive of the American society, destined to be moribund and regressive.
