Mark's assertion doesn't stand against von Clausewitz dictum: "No battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy". It's easy to criticize almost any war plan in retrospect (the US made many tactical errors during World War Two). However given the initial uncertainties of the Iraq War, I think things have gone rather well.
One of many nightmare scenarios was that Saddam used nerve gas against his own population as American troops overwhelmed Saddam's military. One could write a book describing different catastrophic scenarios where the Iraq War went terribly wrong (no doubt some American military tactician did write such a book and it was referred to during the initial planning). Fortunately none of those disaster scenarios actually happened mainly due to the skill of our military. Read one of John Keegan's excellent books if you want to get some perspective on this.
