Robert, do you actually know the extent that America has this "foolish dependence on Middle Eastern oil"?
I think you will find that America mainly has a foolish dependance mainly on Canadian and Mexican oil- a [North & South] American dependance.
Now, we have a more significant foreign dependance- drugs. Something that we could solve quite easily but we refuse to look at the issue seriously.
Obvious if druggies would simply stop taking illegal drugs this problem would be solved. But they aren't going to do this. So, perhaps we should do things in this regards which solves the problems regarding the threat of terrorism in relation drugs and worry less about causing any increase in addiction and health affects by providing drugs to the druggies. If we just did this for just 2 years this could have a significant effect.
