Please view this Excel speadsheet, statistics supplied by census.gov which breaks down voting and voter registration patterns based on education and employment status (and therefore income) for the years 1964-2004.
Please note that a greater percentage of the employed vote than do the unemployed, and that the higher the level of education, the larger the percentage of voters. The employed/unemployed percentages are not very far apart, but would include retirees as well as jobless people in the "not in labor force" numbers. The rate of voter participation rises by about 10 percentage points with each level of education.
This rather flies in the face of the idea that large groups of low-income people use their votes to extort money out of the wealthy.
The middle class and the retirees using their votes to their own advantage, now, that's another matter. I still wouldn't call it extortion or robbery, though. The wealthy wouldn't have their wealth if it weren't for the middle class working their butts off.
