OK, so he wasn't President while he was Supreme Commander, Allied Forces Europe. But he had at least one son in the fight... Landed at D-Day, if I recall correctly.

... which means Ike had a much firmer grasp on what it means to send other people's children. Lucky for us and our parents, he didn't have to (except the banana republics, of course).
