Washington's city council just passed a living wage law, setting it at $12.50/hour, over the strident objections of WalMart, and the threat that WalMart would take its ball and go home--refuse to open stores under construction.
The city council justified its action, in part, on the hard fact that study after study shows that WalMart's wages are so low that about 80% of its employees depend on public assistance to survive. The council determined that the stores set to open in DC would have cost the city several million dollars to support about a thousand new workers trying to survive on poverty wages. Without the living wage law, WalMart would have been a net loss for the city.
All they're doing is insisting that WalMart pay its own way and stop sucking at the government teat. Living wage laws counter corporate welfare.

- The real point of all this...
- Did you know that in (whacky, conservative, libertarian...) Utah, all gas stations sell their gas for the same price?
