George, I apologize for the behavior of the HabitableZone. As you can tell from most of the comments here and on the Community board, many other people here feel bad about it too.
In my message above, I asked the "Zoners" to refrain from challenging you, but they were not able to comply with my wishes. There is a reason for it: In the past the HabitableZone has been upset by people using false identities to play tricks on us and to cause trouble. People have become defensive as a result, and often try to check out the identity of a new person.
I view this paranoia about identity to be a serious flaw in the community, and one for which I must accept some responsibility. I wrote the software that runs the board, and it does not yet have a registration and signin system that would provide reassurance about identity. The fact that it's too easy to adopt a false identity leads naturally to paranoia about identity. I plan to improve the software eventually, but for now we have to live with the uncertainty that a person really is who he says he is.
I have no real power over the people here; I can only make requests and suggestions and hope that everyone goes along. In this case I failed to persuade the community to give you a chance, and I apologize for that. In spite of the fact that I can't offer you any guarantees that the HabitableZone will reform, I hope you'll give us another chance. You said that you lurked here a long time before posting, so I hope that even if you stop posting, you'll still come by to read us. And watch for an announcement of new software with registration and signin, because it should eliminate the problems you had this time. Please don't give up on us.
