Okay, maybe some Democratic constituents are. The word "Nanny State" does have a specific connotation.

For one thing, a vacation cutting brush might be more easily cut short than one with scheduled events.

For another thing, the President is as much in communication when traveling as he is squatting in the Oval Office. Adults know this.

I didn't elect a Corn God. Or a father figure. The guy's job is to run the executive branch of the Federal Government. Frankly, I'm a little unnerved in recent years by how the Federal government has completely superceded every other level of government.

We already established that Bush is not as good at facades as other presidents have been. Surely his poll numbers would be higher if he was smoother.

I hope to God Americans don't lose their self-reliance. The most frightening thing I heard was a story about some government official in New Orleans who had a colleague who kept getting phone calls (somehow) from his mother in a nursing home for five days. FIVE DAYS after the hurricane passed. At the end, she apparently died. The moral of the story, according to the official, was that the government had not done its job in saving her.

If I ever got a phone call like that, and could not raise help where I was, I hope to God I would go after her myself, and if they still found her dead after five days, I hope that they would find me dead halfway there, on a raft of spare tires lashed together. If not, If I sat there taking calls for five days, waiting for my lords in Washington to save my mother across town, I hope that my brother and sister would hunt me down like a goddam dog.

There is some cultural difference here. I don't know what it is. I have theories. Maybe I'll talk about it sometime.
