re: noise signifying nothing

FRANKC: "It doesn't stick to the wall Don. Do you really think this will be a political issue in 06 much less 08? Don't make me laugh."

MY REPLY: Yes. It will. Actually one of the most popular reasons elected politicians get tossed from office is incompetence during a disaster or emergency. People remember. When incoming governors attend a training put together by the National Governors Association, that's one of the key messages they hear.

In this case, Bush won't run again. But his incompetence here will spill over into public perceptions about which political party can do a better job at this. Given the failure of the government's response with Katrina, public confidence in the centerpiece of the Republican led war on terror - the Homeland Secutiry Department - has faltered. It will leave a lasting impression. Not only will average citizens believe the party in charge doesn't care about them, but that the party in charge doesn't know how to secure the homelandand protect this people of this nation.

And please don't take my partisan references here as being partisan. I am simply stating what is a very likely response to this disaster. Keep in mind one million American citizens have lost their homes and everythig they owned. Americans will attempt to make sense of this in the simplest and most straightforward way they can. And the easiest way to make sense of this for most people is that the political party in charge failed.
