If you're dealing with any plausible alternative energy source, you're going to have SOMETHING from sea to shining sea. Solar power farms. Wind farms. Biofuel farms.
Almost all of these, including wave power and hydroelectric, are methods of using the power the sun delivers to the Earth. This power is large, but widely spread, and methods of pulling gigawatts out of it are also going to be widely spread. You want a gigawatt out of a hundred acres, you need nuclear.
On the other hand there's no real inherent problem with this if you're clever about it. Roofs take up space anyway. Why not put solar panels there? Biofuels from low-water, low-maintenance plants might simply replace one scrubby field of weeds with a more useful one. Why not put windmills ON the power line towers? Don't know if you could feed directly into the high-voltage lines themselves, but you could run lower voltage collector lines along the same towers.
