They know that, if they don't join the new government, they will be exterminated by the 80% of the country that is not Sunni. The fact that the recent disagreement over the elections has been handled by non-violent means is overwhelmingly important.
Therefore, I am on record with the following prediction, which actually seems to be happening.
Link
Nearly ALL of the Sunnis will join up with the new government that has them represented proportionately to their population. Sunni support for the insurgents will evaporate and Sunnis will turn in the Al Qaeda groups operating from their neighborhoods. Al Qaeda attacks will therefore diminish into insignificance.
Amazingly enough, it seems to be happening as we speak, despite Al-Zawahri's claim of victory. I might call attention to the fact that if you have to announce your victory, you haven't won yet.
Bowser will be so unhappy when his dream of seeing Al Qaeda take over Iraq falls apart.
Current Events » in reply to Got to admit, I didn't see that coming.
Didn't I say that the Sunnis would join up.
