*sigh*

"Islamist," as it has been used consistently by me and others on this board, refers to radical Islamic movements, like al Qaeda, the Taliban, the Wahabbi movement, and others like that. It is characterized by advocation of every aspect of life being subservient to a very fundamental interpretation of Islam, including government.

"Islam" or more typically "Muslim" covers the broader range of that faith, including moderates and those who advocate secular governments.

I think you were well aware of that, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I can stick "radical" on it if people are having a problem on it. As it is, it's getting so I have to stick footnotes on every term I use to make sure people don't float away.

Had I used the term "fundamentalist" to refer to a Christian, I dare say you would have had no problem at all nailing a specific set of characteristics to that title.
