Take away the civil war and divide peacefully and you would have two competitive nations fighting over raw materials and resources. The wild west would have been the new battlefields for exapnsion and conquest. Armed conflict would have arrived sooner or later anyway.
Had the rebellion of slaves you describe occurred in the separate south, we likely would have seen a mass slaughter of African American slaves and another human tragedy of a different kind. This mass slaughter might also spur another conflict between these two new nations at a later date as well.
The worst possible outcome would be the acceptable use of slaves by the Americas and throughout much of the west as they would be assimilated by the two powers. Even today, here we might very well see slaves, ownership certificates and auctions.
Industrialization wouldn't end slavery. It would merely change the slaves from farm labor to industrial labor. Firing furnaces, operating machinery and repairing it.
It has been my experience that the bigger the apparent evil, the greater the unseen good. This is why I know Iraq will give positive returns. Already it has forced a Middle East self-introspection like no other time in its history. The region desperately needs reforms and conflicts, bloodshed and suffering seem to be inescapable when pursuing such a course.
