You may very well be right in your scenario. The point I was trying to make though was that there are no assurances to how history plays out after armed conflict. The case could be made that had we not entered WWII, Russia would have been decimated, Hitler would've eventually been defeated from within or just by the huge impossibility of trying to run his corner of the world and we would never have had to "fight" the Cold War. It's an absurd concept to think we'd never enter the war especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor and Germany's declaration of war against us but it's an interesting study to try to plot out where the world would've ended up without us in the mix. I really doubt Hitler could've achieved his goals and, even if he did, I somehow doubt he'd have stood still to Japan's own quest for power. Those two likely would've finished each other off and done much of the work for us.
Huge imperialistic governments may have quick success but they always end up failing by expanding too far. Their front lines get too far from their center of power and are easily attacked by insurgent elements as we've seen a few times in our own history. That's not to say there isn't justification to put up roadblocks to their spread but those don't have to necessarily be military action. Obviously if your own borders are threatened, all bets are off for diplomatic solutions.
