I doubt most preachers/ministers actually believe

One of the things that put me on my path to atheism was actually studying religious history, something anyone desiring to become a minister of their faith would have to immerse themselves in. Generally people that seek that profession are smart and articulate and often begin with noble ambitions to help others.

I imagine that many get a wake-up call during their religious studies that much of what they're about to teach is simply the machinations of man. I would also think that many, at that point, go into this huge rationalization mode where they think that their ability to help others is going to be reinforced by not exposing the charade. They know that, in order to get the attention of their flock and be able to counsel them in their daily lives, they must use a device to keep that audience in the arena. Most people would not respond to a weekly visit to a building to discuss just ethics and basic life skills. They will however break away from their weekly routines if that visit can buy them eternal life and a rationalization away from their misdeeds.

Why do I suspect this? Because I could pull it off. I have a gift of gab, a sense of humor, a good singing voice, a great insight into human emotions and behavior, and the ability to lie through my teeth and get away with if I so desire. I also have a desire to better the Earth. I choose to do it one interaction at a time but, could I get over the lying part, I know I could build a huge and rabid flock and influence so many more people. Starting a church has actually tempted me but it's my own integrity that prevents it. I know too many others with those same talents of persuasion with major chinks in their honesty that could easily be tempted into preaching for a living.

That said, there are obviously men of faith that are not shaken by the study of history. Rationalization is a powerful force especially when any doubt can be pushed away by assigning it to an evil devil. The historical records don't support the religious texts? Oh well, God or the devil designed it that way to test our faith. I wish we could conduct some secret poll of all religious leaders with one question - Do you actually believe in God?
