re: The ones I know do.

Your explanations of your beliefs hardly qualifies as what I imagine "born again" to be. Most I know that claim that distinction don't exactly mix physics and science fiction relationships into their system.

Were I to have the experiences you and your wife had, I'd probably be a bit baffled but it makes me wonder why I haven't experienced such things as well. As a matter of fact, nobody I know has ever had an experience like you described and I know a ton of very diverse people. I surely have had extremely dynamic people die on me in my life and I'm curious why they didn't begin to do little stunts around the house to get my attention. I've always been very perceptive and wouldn't miss the clues you feel were presented to you. I'm sure the answer that forms in your mind is that somehow you've been graced with some extra sense that I don't possess. Things are happening around me all the time but my mind is closed to them.

Here's where my doubts come in because, to accept what you think you saw as supernatural, gives you an advancement in humanity over those that cannot sense the magic. It boils down to me as no more than an ego boost, something we humans crave intently. It's the very thing that makes people believe horoscopes when we all truly know they have no basis in fact. Couple that need to be special with the loss of someone that really means something to you and it's a powerful mind game. Suddenly your brain rejects logical answers to things you observe and begins to set itself up to be aware of only the things that would reinforce the wishful thinking.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy fantasy and can watch a movie or sci-fi show that explores alternative universes, godlike beings, time travel, etc. and can fully fool my mind during my entertainment experience to discount logic and enjoy the ride. I've had my spiritual times too when I sought exactly the types of things you saw. I desparately wanted to see spirits and feel the warmth and assurance a God and protector would give me. They simply never came other than by going into that entertainment mode and turning off logic.

I hope you're right actually that the things you experienced came from your recently departed loved one and not fertile imaginations. Even atheists have to admit that it's a bit of a bummer to believe that there is no soul that continues on when our blood stops flowing. But just cause it's not good news does not justify coming up with illogical explanations to rationalize wanting to go on forever. I'd be willing to bet that the number of people that claim to have spiritual encounters with their departed friends and they were enormously saddened by the death is much greater than survivors of the dead where they were pretty happy to see them go.
