It works!

Try here.

Several children attend Toddler Time at the library whose parents practice baby sign. They communicate well together, but the children who encounter adults and other children who don't understand their signs experience the same frustration as a child whose sounds are not understood.

Fine and gross motor abilities and good vision are important to sign acquisition. So is interest by both parent and child, and consistency in use by the parent.

It may, however, just make it possible for them to tell their parents off at an earlier age. ;)

My daughter learned to speak complete sentences quite early, but she may not have cared about sign, had it been used with hearing babies back then. She already had the basics of communicating hunger, boredom, injury, wanting particular objects and so forth down pretty well with her own system. Basic needs and desires appear to be the focus of the signing to babies initiative. Most of what she wanted to communicate had to do with questions that began with the words how and why.
