You fell for it

He got you to whine, didn't he? No offense meant, just pointing out how easy it is to start the game, and how difficult it can be to stop. More particularly, it's easy for politicians to manipulate us into this, especially on a mass basis, and we can only rely on ourselves as individuals to resist it.

I read another article about the study, and it seems that it was based on ~70 kids in Berkeley. It struck me that that was rather odd laboratory for this particular subject, since--while Berkeley as a whole, as a city, is hardly the Soviet-era Moscow that the Right shrieks about--it's certainly Liberal, and so kids of Conservative parents might feel like members of a minority. For control the study should have found a mirror-image situation in which Conservatives were the majority and Liberals the minority.

That said, though, don't you perceive distinct differences in the personalities of Liberals and Conservatives? I see characteristic ways of looking at the world, noticeably different tolerances for novelty and change and uncertainty, degree of faith in fixed rulesets, more or less need to know one's place in the social order, willingness to defer to authority, more or less xenophobia, and on and on and on.
