People don't talk much about MAD any more, but considering we still have thousands of nukes, for all practical purposes it's still in effect. The only nuclear threat still in existence is the "madman" scenario where some crazy leader just doesn't care. For all that the leaders of both North Korea and Iran seem to fit the bill, I'm not convinced that they're suicidally crazy. But they're willing to take chances to push the envelope, which is why I figure shooting down a missile test demonstrates we're not so risk-averse as they hope (even while we're not really risking a lot).
Several times I've seen a Fox "News" graphic of the northern hemisphere showing supposed missile tracks from North Korea deep into North America, as far east as Chicago. That's typical Fox bullshit, since analysts estimate that the three stage Tae Kwan Do II (?) might just barely make it to the West Coast. What's relevant in that is that it shows how primitive their missile program still is, and suggests that we can set them way far back, relatively cheaply, if we take the initiative early.
While I think that preemptive war is just plain stupid, I don't mind at all knocking some expensive hardware out of the sky if it'll save lives down the road. Create an "international incident", big deal...hell, it'll bring 'em to the negotating table just for the chance to yell at us.
