When Arabs (Jordan) were in control of East Jeruselam, Jews were not allowed to visit their holy sites, the Jewish cemetary was desecrated, and restrictions were also placed on Christians. By comparison, access to Islamic sites, such as the Temple Mount, was much greater for Muslims after Israel united the city in 1967.
Can you cite me one place in the Muslim Arab world where Jews can gather in public and pray without putting their lives in danger?!?
I must also take issue with the claim that "cosmopolitan" Arabs welcomed Jews to Palestine prior to the creation of Israel. Recall that Arabs weren't in charge there for the five centuries that preceded 1948 - it was the Ottoman and British Empires that made such decisions to allow or deny immigration, not the Arabs.
Let's not forget that the 1947 UN Partition Plan called for Jeruselam to be an international city, under neither Israeli nor Arab control. The Zionist Jews accepted the plan. The Arabs rejected it, and attacked the Jews.

The history of 1948-1967 contradicts that notion
