From my original source:
By 1947, Jewish holdings in Palestine amounted to about 463,000 acres. Approximately 45,000 of these acres were acquired from the Mandatory Government; 30,000 were bought from various churches and 387,500 were purchased from Arabs. Analyses of land purchases from 1880 to 1948 show that 73 percent of Jewish plots were purchased from large landowners, not poor fellahin. Those who sold land included the mayors of Gaza, Jerusalem and Jaffa. As’ad elÂShuqeiri, a Muslim religious scholar and father of PLO chairman Ahmed Shuqeiri, took Jewish money for his land. Even King Abdullah leased land to the Jews. In fact, many leaders of the Arab nationalist movement, including members of the Muslim Supreme Council, sold land to Jews.
In fact, I misread it. The 73 percent was purchases from large landowners, not purchases in general. If you go by the other numbers, more like 83 percent was purchased directly from Arabs. If you include the 30,000 from churches, it comes up to 90 percent purchases. I'm not sure exactly what "acquired from the Mandatory Government" means, or where they got that land.
The Arabs living in the new nation of Israel were encouraged to stay. Many left on the advice of the invading Arab nations, assured that they would get their own back and more when the hated Jews were exterminated. Didn't work out that way.
Of all the nations on the Earth that were generated by arbitrary fiat by the U.N. or other international agreements, many of them involving unpleasant changes for much of the population, for some reason only the one occupied by Jews is universally hated and considered illegitimate. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza were condemned day after day, year after year by international groups. Somehow Syria's years-long occupation of Lebanon didn't count.
When Israel gave up settlements in the West Bank, and pulled out of Gaza entirely, what did that buy them? Is there even the slightest doubt in anyone's mind that if Israel had pulled completely back to the 1967 borders that the result would have been Arab fortification of the new land and the continued goal of extermination? Right now Gaza is an arsenal, filled with weapons that have been pouring in from Egypt for many months.
Does anyone wonder why it's considered completely acceptable for Arabs to stipulate that "occupation" consists of any Jews living on the disputed land whatsoever?
Question for the audience: Is the Southwest U.S. being "stolen" because citizens of Mexico are moving in and taking residence?
