Beware the victims. They love it. It gives them the excuse to be ruthless, the justification to be unyielding, the right to be malicious, for they are the righteous wronged. They have identified their enemy and they glory in the alleged pain their persecutor has caused. That now gives them the right to do anything they want. After all, it is justice, it is vengeance, it's getting back what's yours from those who took it away. Didn't they do it to us? Now we're going to get back at them. We will not just defeat them, not just destroy them, we will humiliate them, degrade them, we will torture them endlessly. It is not the urge to prevail, it is the desire to punish. Rape their women while you make them watch before you kill them slowly and hideously.
You can see the victim syndrome in the Hitlers of this world, in the terrorists, you can see it everywhere. Listen to them, the sneer, the smug self-righteousness, the glee with which they patronize the peacemakers, before they cast them also into the vessel of their hatred. For the victim never has his vengeance, he is not content with winning, he must continue this poisonous crusade and add to his rage. The victimizer will never be totally eliminated, so he must be sought out, he is always in disguise, in hiding, he must be rooted out, exposed, dragged into the light of righteousness and revenge.
This is a mammal invention, but the primates perfected it. Even reptiles show more compassion because at least they are incapable of empathy. There is no evil in the world of superstition, no horror from hell, than can match them. Fear not the bogeyman, the demon, the monster from the pit. The phantoms of the imagination are no match for the squirming thing that lives in the black heart of the avenger. It is humanity at its foulest and blackest. And they are right here among us.
