I think an ice age would be far more destructive

Photosynthesis stops below 10 degrees Celcius. We wouldn't be able to feed the billions of mouths.....

The Earth's orbit is eccentric, and in one year will be either at aphelion or perihelion at least once. So things average out. The big question in my mind is not what causes global warming...the earth is simply returning to normal temperature after the last ice age glaciers finish melting.

The big question is: What causes the ice ages?!?! I mean seriously, what would cause kilometer-thick ice caps to form all the way down to the 49th parallel ?!?!

Did the Sun swallow a planet?
Did a moon hit the Earth?
Was there a global algae bloom that pumped the atmosphere full of oxygen causing the world's biomass to combust spontaneously and veil the Sun with reflective ash?
Was the Earth at a cold point in a Milankovich cycle?
Did a gas cloud pass between the Sun and the Earth?
