Tom, I work in the heart of hurricane country for Emergency Management, and none of our storm projections and forecasts are based on global warming. They are based solely on wind shear estimates and Atlantic water surface temperatures, which are at record levels this year, by the way. The slow season we've had in spite of this is very puzzling, but global warming has nothing to do with it, one way or the other. Hurricanes are on their own cycle, and it is poorly understood, but it is not increasing. The last few years are simply part of a natural upturn which has been expected for some time now, no one blames it on global warning. In fact, the weather people I've talked to are very interested in just HOW global warming will affect the storm cycle.
The anecdotal global warming background hum you get on the press and in popular media is just that, background noise, I'm sure no one in the sciences takes it seriously. As for the persecution, or lack of it, of scientists who do or don't dissent from global warming orthodoxy...I don't deny it might happen, but I'm not familiar with it and I suspect it is no more than you'd get from any other fad or fashion in the sciences. I'm sure that funding for a lot of programs has been cut for other reasons as well in many other sciences: reasons that have more to do with the current political climate than the planetary one.
