Valiant effort

But still grasping at straws.

The theory that Bush was involved in the destruction of the WTC has had over five years to accrete publicity, and therefore Google hits. The people behind it promoted it aggressively, through books and seminars and public speaking; and it has that intrinsic nutcase quality that naturally gains lots of media attention, of the "look at the whackjobs!" variety.

Nice try, though.

78 hits on this email after (I'd guess a month or so) is about right. It's--how shall I put this delicately--targeted at people unlikely to build high-traffic Web sites or otherwise have the means to publicize it outside the mailing list jerk circle. 'Course, maybe I could change that by sending a copy to Keith Olbermann. Ya think?

Another nice try.

Your final paragraph is another nice try, but the biggest stretch of all: "By your odd logic on "grassroots" movements, this must represent the true beliefs of a great many anti-Bush Democrats." The Bush-WTC theory wasn't promulgated by Democrats, nor has it ever been associated with them. The anti-Obama hit piece came to me from a Republican and is being circulated inside Republican circles. It's a grassroots Republican smear campaign.

Lob another one, Tom, I'm not tired yet, and I'm enjoying the spectacle of you trying to defend the Republican smear campaign against Barack Obama. To be honest with you, big guy, I'm surprised. Most respectable Republicans wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, knowing that it's impossible to avoid getting some of it on you. Tarnish by association, the opposite of gilt by association. Whatever else I may say about your beliefs, I do consider you to be a respectable Republican.
