Humidity Lindy...humidity.

Here in the desert I see TONS of contrails - almost every single day! Everytime a jet flies overhead its leaving a trail here - and the trail can last from a few minutes to almost an hour, if there is no wind. Those photos on the site were from New Mexico - another dry state with low humidity, high pressure atmosphere. I don't see it as much in California, because the humidity and lower air pressure allows the trail of water vapor and pollution to merge more quickly into the surrounding atmosphere.

On a Southwest flight out of here to CA, I had a window just behind the wing, I could watch as the contrails started plowing out of the engine, no hidden sprayers, just normal jet exhaust. I thought about you as I watched it. It gets thinner and less noticeable as the plane enters a more humid atmosphere and increases or decreases based upon the throttle applied. I could spot a significant difference after we had crossed the CA mountains into the humidity trap of the CA coast. When the pilot lays off the throttle it diminishes, when the pilot accelerates and climbs it is most noticeable. The flight routes of planes out of the airport leave these "tracks" in the sky in low humidity high pressure areas.

The next time you take a flight, try to get a seat behind the wing so you can watch the phenomenon yourself - firsthand.
