re: For your browsing pleasure

Yeah, thought you'd find that one. I looked around there for a while before I made my post.

That's all of them since the year 1500. That's every plant, worm, bug, bird, fish, or other living thing documented. Unfortunately, the search function doesn't have a "date of extinction" file.

The polar bear is not going extinct. Almost every news story you read on this issue refers to the population at the Western Hudson Bay.

More details here. Of the twelve populations for which they have trend data, five are declining, five are stable, and two are increasing.

The term "removals" refers to bears killed by legal hunting or other methods. At Baffin Bay, for example, almost ten percent of the counted population is removed this way annually. Work that out.

One of my favorite news stories in the past month was Inuit people complaining that the thinning ice was making it harder to kill polar bears.

You might wonder what point I'm trying to make in this discussion. It's this:

Real problems--and endangered species ARE a real problem--need to be addressed with objective and realistic methods and outlooks. Not emotion and panic. There is a balance to be maintained between the needs of humans and other species, and going overboard in either direction based on vague information is not good.

The facts matter.
