The area I grew up in in oklahoma (7 miles from the nearest town) had a community made up of recently freed slaves... the remains of their houses could be found all over, there was also a small cemetery just down the road- I was told that many of the dead there had died from small pox...

I have been told that parents before the polio vaccine lived in terror of their kids getting the disease...

life expectancies have steadily increased over the decades- complain all you want about the evils of modern life, but you damn well betteraknowledge that modern medicine is allowing us not only to live longer lives, but better quality lives... The loons that complain about the 'conspiracy' of modern medicine are welcome to try going without it completely.... one way or another, they will stop complaining.
