I do consider the material presented quite carefully. Then I make a judgement. In our friend Isaac's case, the way the story unfolded and the way he presented himself were - to me - convincingly false.
Just in case your questions were serious (you can make fun of me if you didn't really intend for me to answer)(jeez, again with the greater than signs??? I will translate them to right parens)...
1) Why do you do it? Why do people come here and assert something as true? Don't they want and expect others to read their stuff and make a judgement and agree/ignore/disagree? That is why I do it.
What is the benefit you derive? I like to see my words in print as much as the next person, so there is certainly an element of vanity involved. I like to think I have something intelligent to say on some subjects some times, and that people might find some benefit.
Is it just a joke and you derive pleasure when people capitulate to your closed mind? a) It is not a joke (unless I'm trying to be funny - I hope you will be able to tell.),
b) No one has ever capitulated to my closed mind or my anything else, so I will let you know how it feels if it ever happens. No wait - I think I can answer this part. Some times around here, someone will say something that is demonstrably false and with a little internet wizardry one can present the proof. I've done this magic a few times and I can tell you how I feel: bad, ashamed. I do not enjoy hurting peoples feelings.
Or is it an expression of anger? Sometimes in a hot debate, where I feel my opponent is ignoring what I say, or pretending I said something different than I did, or otherwise cheating, or making personal insults, I do get angry. And it does affect my response. I feel bad about it afterwards.
Where you feel superiority and condescension for those who are arrogant also and will be your henchmen? No. And not that the issue comes up often, I discourage henchmen.
Is it a feeling of power? Sometimes when I get a point accross simply and clearly, I do feel a thrill of satisfaction.
Where you seek disciples who look to you for possibilities? No.
2) Do you ever think of the results of your actions? All the time. I am told that I spend a lot more time on this than is good for me.
Do you ever feel about how you effect the world when you slam the door shut to a large number of people who feel this could be a POSSIBILITY?
Hmmm. I could write an essay on this topic. For a door to slam shut, the reasoning should be very persuasive. If the reasoning is very persuasive then the door should slam shut!
All my life I have loved the creepy feeling I got from watching movies and reading books and magazines and comics of horror and fantasy and scifi. I would be upset if someone tried to interfere in that enjoyment that I got from it. But really, what could they do? Tell me that all of that material is very unlikely or impossible? I KNOW THAT ALREADY. It would be silly for me to attempt to take as real or even possible all of this material.
Although there certainly are things that will surprise us when we find out about them, we do not live in a world that is filled with ghosts, demons, aliens, time travelers, undersea civilizations, intellegent insects bent on taking over the world, Dr. Evil, etc. If we did, we would see it in our very own lives all the time. Why do I say that? Because nature is not coy. It does not take supernatural steps to keep itself hidden from us. You want to find a new bug to name after yourself, then you can probably do it just by going on an expedition up the Amazon (a little background in entomology would help). You want to find werewolves in Transylvania or Bigfoots in Washington state? You could do that too if they were there.
Sadly, the world and the internet is full of hoaxters. This is proven. They are exposed all the time. Sometimes they admit it. The "proof" that these hoaxters will only become more and more sophisticated as technology increases.
So what do you think we should do about that?
Any feelings of responsibility at all? Sure. To the extent that I remove the delicious creepy feeling from their lives, I am sorry. To the extent that I help them see that our world is not a crazy, chaotic place where anything can and does happen all the time, then I am proud.
