re: How are we unique?

"Why do we consider ourselves unique as a species?

Because we see no other species capable of the things we can do?

Isn't that a sign of our deep ignorance?"

No.
Instead it's an indication that we know what the word "unique" means.

"Or is it not because we don't understand enough the other species and in our narcissism, believe we're better?"

Well I seriously doubt any other species knows that much about humans- even our pets such cats don't seem to have much understanding of us. And I haven't noticed any whales who are successful exploring that alien frontier known as "land".

"Critters show us 2 things however: they've been around much longer, are much more resilient, and will outlast us, even though every individual critter lasts but a fraction of a human lifespan."

That's one way to look at it, but we have lived as long as any other creature, but we have changed a fair amount through time. So, we simply aren't stuck in some rut. And therefore we someday might live on the Moon whereas the elephant without human interference would probably never live on the Moon.
