But the belief of existence or non existence of the soul [or a creator] does not by itself argue one way or other about the significant of human existence. Only an immoral person or non rational person could arrive at conclusion that humans are insignificant- what is more significant than humans or even a single human life?
Well said - also, it seems to escape such people, that "the map is not necessarily the territory": being able to locate the correlates of psychological states within the brain doesn't mean these states have been explained or understood - simply mapped. They haven't approached and understanding of the subjective quality of consciousness: it's simply 'explained away' as an illusion. Similarly, noting signs of intelligence and even consciousness in animals, while valid and fascinating, is 'mapping' our subjectively known states onto observed animal behaviour. It doesn't necessarily make them our equivalents.
Isn't it amazing how in their drive to kill the soul, these relentless materialists always ignore language, thought, philosophy, art, space exploration and the like. We are no different to animals, we are totally insignificant specks, we are merely a collection of atoms ... and so it goes.
But, the greatest and deepest mystery of all, is how this thread appeared on Space Sciences instead of Offtopic or Flame, where it really belongs.
