When Galileo discovered Venus phases and Jupiter Moons, he had at once many examples proving the Earth wasn't the center, but it also enlarged space and time (it takes a year to orbit the sun and not one day to orbit the Earth).
But humans have already dominated the world and found no match to them. That's why, perhaps, we need to meet an extra-terrestrial intelligence to put a brake on our narcissism.
But do we?
We know small species like insects will survive us, even if taken individually, insects die very quickly, but they are numerous and organized. It depends on how we consider a species needs to survive or to expand.
We study other animals and discover they have similarities with traits we considered only humans shared. Are they important ? Perhaps, but perhaps trees can leave better traces of their existence than entire human civilizations and to leave a trace might matter more than just passing by on Earth.
We have an opinion on what matters but time changes that, and other species consider time very diffferently from us.
