I might disagree with him but I am sure he is motivated not by nihilism but instead by the history of many centuries of religous and nationalist wars which have bloodstained European soil. It is easy to see how someone could conclude that all religions, and nationalisms, cause nothing but trouble, fanaticism and moral blindness. My argument is that although I understand this POV, I believe it goes too far to a materialist outlook which then denies any credence to the extra or hidden spiritual dimensions of existence.
I disagree with your assessment:
To him there's no point to life; no meaning to anything. Raoul wouldn't fight to defend anything, because he doesn't believe in anything. To him, his society, culture, and people are simply illusions with no substance
- I'm sure Raoul believes in great things and would fight for freedom against a foreign invasion.
Like I said, you're on your own here.

That's a stretch too far - you're on your own, pal
