The technology for virtual exploration will support human virtual exploration of incredibly hostile environments. When will humans walk on the Venusian surface or plumb Europa's oceans? It could be within our reach (virtually) if we push robotic exploration. Pushing human exploration will net us a trip or two to Mars and/or the moon, with no lasting return for the money spent and for 100's of times the cost that could return the same data for virtual exploration.
Human movement into space is currently best left to the private "space tourist" movement that will provide an economic basis for human presence in space. That is the way to bootstrap humans into space not ill conceived and premature "footprint and flags" photo ops by NASA.

One other thing---how about Venus or Europa's oceans?
The whole thread (42 posts)
- Robots or humans: time to grow up?
- This is so typical...
- We were wrong in the 40's and the 50's...Why would we be right today?
- re: Robots or humans: time to grow up?
- Not an either-or, really, but I vote for people in the long run.
- bandwidth and latency
- re: Robots or humans: get real
- Robots are people too
- re: Robots or humans: time to grow up?
- Science, or ego? Or both? Doing what each does best.
- re: Robots or humans: time to grow up?
- What people want is change, new things....
