Your harangue might be a lot more convincing if the human presence in space had been a bit more productive and exciting. As it is, our manned missions have been very disappointing, not only from a scientific point of view, but from an exploratory, humanistic one. It is the robotic missions which have overturned our view of the solar system, opened new windows on astronomy, provided earth resources monitoring and real jobs and industries through communications and navigation technologies.
Of course, the truth is that robots need not replace people, there is no reason why we can't have both, and we should. This is not a John Henry vs the steam hammer situation, but it's going to require that the proponents of manned exploration actually go out and do something in space. Right now, I'd rather watch movies from Mars than astronauts playing in zero-gee. As it is, the manned space program is doing nothing to get me out of my easy chair, it is simply providing vicarious adventures for its easychair-bound proponents. :)
