If any "magic" technology evolves to make either relativistic or FTL starflight possible, colonization becomes a much less complex process.
On the other hand, if one assumes "normal" propulsion (still much better than what we have now), one has to create large-scale starships for generation travel.
The catch is that if you can build things like that, on the order of O'Neill colonies, then colonizing solar space becomes easy, and you don't really have to go to Alpha Centauri in the first place.
I think people underestimate the potential of our own solar system for habitation, if you can get past the "planet" fixations. There's a LOT of free-floating raw material out there, and all the solar energy you want.
Come up with something that lets humans live and reproduce naturally in zero-G, and that really gets you somewhere. Can't live on planets any more? Maybe they won't care. Or just use teleoperators to see the sights.

- Not an either-or, really, but I vote for people in the long run.
- bandwidth and latency

- Robots are people too

- Science, or ego? Or both? Doing what each does best.
