Yes, robots can provide the public with all kinds of novelties, in space:
I'm convinced one of the main reason why manned space was prefered, was because it was very dynamic, with live TV pictures and many many movies and beautiful pictures.
Well robots can do that too, even from Mars and if they put cameras on the ground, filming the robots themselves, we will surely identify ourselves with the robots.
Cameras become better and better and indeed, the young people already are used to a robot filled world.
Because unmanned probes are small, less expensive, they can benefit from much more recent technology and those who conceive the missions are more likely to follow the whole adventure from concept to results and interpretations coming back.
That is also why I'm far less interested in a manned mission to Mars: it takes too long for every single step towards it.
New technologies also mean rediscovering things through new eyes, new ways, not just discovering entirely new worlds.
Space has so much to offer.
