The most important weapon against them is critical thinking. I am not familiar with the book you mention, but I highly reccommend "Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan.
It is sad that in todays world so many people cling to beliefs like Astrology, Clairvoiance, psychic powers, and other pseudoscience quackery. Heck, the long ago humiliated and debunked Uri Geller has his own TV show again. The claim that the position of Jupiter causes earthquakes is still floating around. People still order their lives by the position of the planets. People spend money and sometimes are killed because they believe in some quack miracle cure. So many people believe in insane conspiracy theories such as 'THE MOON LANDING HOAX', AND THE VARIOUS 9-11 conspiracy theories that dont even pass the common sense test.
What angers me so much about charlatans like Johannes and SDAI is that they borrow from, and pervert and misuse, the language of science in order to make their insane claims sound more credible. They are aware of the fact that their claims are unsupported nonsense and so they intentionally use dishonest means to conceal that fact.
