She knows whereof she speaks

Jody's describing someone she's known since the age of 12 (if I recall correctly), with whom she's been in constant personal touch since then.

Simultaneously, I'm certain Jody doesn't mean to imply that all those who profess, let alone practice, bisexuality are gays struggling through self-reinvention.

However ~

I'll grant you, Robert, the concept that "nurture" can and does often dictate behavior, regardless of one's core orientation. In college, I spent a lot of time with the theater department as a stage crew geek, and witnessed new entries adopting life-style flamboyances which had no direct correlation with their original choice of gender for sex partners... but which sometimes, in a few cases, influenced them to experiment.

And I will repeat a hypothesis I've heard more than once: "humans are innately bisexual." Not in my case, but there's some weight behind the proposal nonetheless. To elaborate, I suggest that a form of "anti-nurture" -- societal, mainly -- more effectively prevents men from exploration than it does women.

The fact that laws (however misguided) against certain behaviors are as old as the oral-tradition precursors to the Book of Leviticus implies to me that the urge to experiment -- and possibly learn thereby -- is as old as the species itself.
