As I watch the primary season come to a climax, it sure looks like the Republican holier-than-thou competition is likely to produce a candidate to delight the religious conservative fringe of the GOP, and horrify the mainstream during the general election. In retrospect it's easy to see how it happened: The religious Right threatened to defect and form their own party; and Huckabee comes along with impeccable credentials as a Baptist minister. Carrot and stick...hammer and anvil. The stars aligned, and lo! a candidate was born. Hal-lay-lew-yuh!
The Democratic side has a number of strong contenders, as even Atilla the Republican had to admit. Interesting to see the messianic mythos developing around Obama, which may give him an edge to attract the strongly religious, while not making it his overall theme and consigning him to the status of a one-trick-pony. Clinton brings competency but the taint of an insider, and even Joe Biden has managed on occasion to come across as "Presidential". I'm also starting to lean toward Obama, but it's reassuring that any likely Democrat could handle the job.
Cue Tom to post "Chickens and the counting thereof"...
