Varley
AFAIK, I've read everything by Varley, and he's one of those writers who frustrates me by not writing nearly often enough. If that was your first Varley, I'd recommend trying a few more to see if you acquire the taste. I was hooked by the Titan, Wizard, and Demon trilogy (Wikipedia notes drily: "novels set in a hollow world reminiscent in structure to a very large Stanford torus space habitat, but with a distinctly different personality", which is masterful understatement), might be a good place to start. A#1 in my book.
