re: A veritable chasm...

--You still don't understand what I mean by "metaphysical," which you are treating like a synonym for "spiritual." Freedom is a political/social concept, and ONLY a political/social concept. It deals with how human beings treat each other, and the idea of individual rights. Incidentally, "rights" are also only a political/social concept. I don't have the energy to crank too much on this either, but I'm not calling you a "commie."

--Nobody has seriously given up any civil liberties in this country. The NSA thing was one of the most overblown things I've ever seen, and you know as well as I do that there was a lot more of politics in it than there was of battle cries for freedom. Most of the outrage against Bush is still about imaginary things he MIGHT do if he decides to invoke martial law or something.

--My point on the computer is that your picture of some desperate computer owner signing away his soul for a work-at-home job because there's NOTHING ELSE he can do for a living doesn't sound like a very realistic scenario to me. What kind of work was it? Odds are it requires some literacy, or even some education.

More likely people will take the job who did a personal trade-off on privacy versus cash and work-at-home convenience. No desperation required.
