The "gun" is an abstraction to clarify the difference between government and economic power. I figured I didn't need to actually explain it. For example, an IRS agent demanding all my financial records for the past three years does not actually point a gun at me. Or a knife. Or a taser. Or any other physical manifestation of the implied power. But the penalty for telling him to go to hell is a bit different than the penalty for cutting up my Bank of America card. Is this that hard to comprehend?
As for the rest of your post, now who's out there on the end of the hyperbole pier? Show me anyone who had to go live in a shack to avoid using a gasoline credit card. Someone with an actual intellect can weigh the privacy and other policies of various credit instruments, and use the ones that match his financial and privacy needs, and discard the rest. I'm aware of issues with different companies, and actually read the fine print. Do you? I can pick my e-mail servers, and handle my own computer's internal records to deal with records I'd rather not have there.
I hate to hammer the point any more than I already have, but over a hundred million Americans have all the details of their entire working, medical, and family lives recorded in the archives of our tax organization. There is no private entity on Earth that comes close to matching this. Instances of abuse of this information by politicians and others is on the record. You would think this should at least be mentioned.
