Safeway does not have a gun.
The key is choice. The word "voluntary" means something.
If there is a case where, say, a credit card company is distributing your private information without your consent, then I agree that there is a real problem.
But almost every other situation allows me to simply sidestep it if I want. I can throw out the Safeway card. I can ditch the gasoline credit card. I don't have to use e-mail. I don't have to use the internet.
If I go out onto the corner and take down the police camera looking at my street, they will come and take me away. If I decide I don't want to tell the IRS information they want, they can take me away. If I decide just to walk through a TSA inspection zone, they can take me away. With guns, if I resist.
I know why you and others are resistant to this concept. If you accept it, it goes someplace you do NOT want to go. But it doesn't make it any less valid.
I believe that a lot of effort was made to tilt this survey to put the U.S. on the same plane as Red China. The difference is that the surveillance in Red China brings real fear.
