Just as Colin Powell was sold out on his UN speech, people in the US trusted George W. Bush et al. in their statements on the evil capacities and intent of Saddam. Heavy pressure was applied even to Powell. The Secretary of State insisted George Tenet sit behind him at the UN in order to demonstrate that US intelligence believed what Powell was going to say.
As it turned out it was false. The CIA didn't believe either the information or the sources. Due diligence demonstrated. However, Tenet, and others, largely pandered to the neocons in order to keep their jobs.
Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld lied to all, as anyone interested in researching the process has to admit. And the House, Senate and American people gave him the benefit of the doubt, to which they weren't entitled.
The ONLY mistake people made was trusting Bush and his administration. "Whooda thunk" an American President would be so dishonest?
And now we know. Those who care to find out.
