Two books: <a href=""http://www.amazon.com/Hubris-Inside-Story-Scandal-Selling/dp/030734682X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201103665&sr=8-1">Hubris", by Michael Isikoff and David Corn, and "A Pretext For War" by James Bamford.
The US had decided to go to war with Iraq before 9-11, and Bush had been working with people to arrange an incident which could be used as a pretext. Included were scenarios of an "invasion" by dissidents which the US would follow up. Saddam would use planes to supress it, the US would shoot them down, then accuse Iraq of aggression. The plan was for Israel to join in, and take Syria as they have the West Bank.
An exampleis the enormous support for Chalabi, even after he was/is demonstrated to have manufactured untruth after untruth. They knew he was lying. And he supplied classified information to Iran.
The reason for the war was simply to extend American influence into the Middle East, gain control over their assets, and dominate the area militarily.
The level of deception is staggering, including the governmental departments created to extend and support the deception.
